It's kind of strange to read about your grandfather on Slashdot. Here is the forum page created shortly after his passing. A lot of Y2K puns I'm sure he would have enjoyed.

Motivation for ASCIIville

As we sat at the kitchen dinette in the house in Prescott, Arizona, Bob told me that his favorite comic strip was Pogo by Walt Kelly. He seemed to be more interested in my cartooning aspirations rather than my computing aspirations.

This site is dedicated, in part, to one of Bob Bemer's major contributions to the computing world: the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, our mutual fascination with software development, and to poke fun at technology primarily and whatever else happens to capture my interest at the moment. My grandfather aka "Bob" played a big part in the development of ASCII and was donned the title: The Father of ASCII.
